Effect of Seasonal Variation on Leaf Cuticular Waxes’ Composition in the Mediterranean Cork Oak (Quercus suber L.)

چکیده

Quercus suber L. (cork oak) leaves were analyzed along one annual cycle for cuticular wax content and chemical composition. This species, well adapted to the long dry summer conditions prevailing in Mediterranean, has a leaf life span of about year. The revealed seasonal variation with coverage increase from newly expanded (115.7 µg/cm2 spring) maximum value fully (235.6 after summer). Triterpenoids dominated composition throughout cycle, corresponding young 26 (22.6% total wax) 116.0 (49% mature leaves, lupeol constituting 70% this fraction. aliphatic compounds increased 39 (young leaves) 71 (mature then decreased 22 slightly during remaining period. major fatty acids, mostly C16 (hexadecanoic acid) C28 (octacosanoic chain lengths. Since pentacyclic triterpenoids are located almost exclusively within cutin matrix (intracuticular wax), cyclic-to-acyclic component ratio shows an extensive deposition intracuticular waxes association establishment mechanical thermal stability water barrier properties cuticle.

Phylogeographical variation of chloroplast DNA in cork oak (Quercus suber).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS In the last decades, the geographical location of the centre of origin of Quercus suber (cork oak), a strictly western Mediterranean oak species, has been the subject of controversy. METHODS RFLP variation over the whole chloroplast DNA molecule and PCR-RFLPs over seven specific cpDNA fragments were analysed phylogeographically to reconstruct the evolutionary history of co...

Effects of cadmium on cork oak (Quercus suber L.) plants grown in hydroponics.

Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) is an autochthonous tree species that is being used for reforestation in heavy-metal-contaminated areas in Spain. A hydroponics experiment was carried out to characterize the effects of Cd on several morphological and physiological parameters in this species, including shoot length, nutrient concentrations and allocation in different organs, leaf pigment concentratio...

Factors aVecting post-Wre crown regeneration in cork oak (Quercus suber L.) trees

Cork oak (Quercus suber) forests are acknowledged for their biodiversity and economic (mainly cork production) values. WildWres are one of the main threats contributing to cork oak decline in the Mediterranean Basin, and one major question that managers face after Wre in cork oak stands is whether the burned trees should be coppiced or not. This decision can be based on the degree of expected c...

Deciphering cork formation in Quercus suber

The family of Fagaceae, comprises about 900 species, among them the best-known group of this family is the oaks, genus Quercus, that are commonly used as timber or for cork production. Cork is produced by Q. suber, an evergreen oak with major economic and environmental importance for Mediterranean region, in particular for Portugal that is the leading producer of this material. Besides, the eco...

Low temperature during winter elicits differential responses among populations of the Mediterranean evergreen cork oak (Quercus suber).

Populations of cork oak (Quercus suber L.) were assessed for seasonal and inter-population variability in, and temperature responses of, the ratio between light-induced variable and maximum fluorescence of chlorophyll, Fv/Fm, considered a surrogate for the maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII). Seedlings from 10 populations throughout the distribution range of Q. suber in th...
